Most Common Surgical Procedures that Result in Catastrophic Injuries Due to Medical Malpractice

Most Common Surgeries That Result in Medical Malpractice and Cause Catastrophic Personal Injuries

There are many different types of surgical procedures that could be performed.  Literally anything from your organs, blood vessels, eyes, and even your bones can be operated on.  Some have a higher rate of success than others, but all could result in Oregon medical malpractice if not performed properly.  However, there are some surgeries that are more likely than other surgeries to result in medical malpractice.  And when that medical malpractice occurs, these surgeries are most likely to result in catastrophic personal injuries including wrongful death.

Generally, the more complicated the procedure the more likely there is the chance for a careless mistake resulting in personal injury due to a surgical error.  The most dangerous procedures which commonly result in negligence of a healthcare provider include the following:

Organ Transplants – What may have been a fiction just decades ago, now virtually all organs can be transplanted into other person’s body including the heart, liver, intestines, and even bone marrow.  But these types of surgeries are very complicated and have a lot of pre-operation, during operation, and post-operation care, treatment, and follow-ups which must be performed.  Even a minor mistakes in pre-op could cause an organ to fail weeks or months after it was transplanted.  While these surgeries are incredibly complicated, this does not mean that healthcare providers are allowed a few free mistakes.  Medical providers are held to the standard of care of a reasonable provider in similar circumstances with similar training and experience.  Thus, if a transplant surgeon makes an error during the most complicated portion of a surgery that another transplant surgeon would not have made, that is a violation of the standard of care and likely medical malpractice.

Heart Surgeries – Like organ transplants, any heart surgery is a very complicated surgery which involved multiple different disciplines of healthcare providers to successfully pull off the surgery.  In fact, during some heart surgery the heart is actually stopped and completely drained of blood so the surgeon and perform repair work or transplants.  During this time the patient is kept alive through pumps that help continue to circulate blood throughout the body.  Any mistakes can result in catastrophic injury such as brain damage or organ damage, or extreme damage could result in the wrongful death of the patient.

Plastic surgeries – There are a lot of plastic surgeries and almost all of them are elective, but this does not mean that surgeons get a free pass on surgical errors.  Many times plastic surgeons involve highly vascularized areas (like the face or lips) which is particularly susceptible to extreme blood loss, nerve damage, or infection.  In fact, infections in the face can quickly become life-threatening and lead to catastrophic blood vessel, nerve, or tissue damage.  Other times plastic surgeries are also performed with “leading” or “cutting edge” technology, which means 1) that the surgeon may not be as experienced with the tools, and 2) the tools may not be as proven or refined and susceptible to errors or malfunctions.

Surgeries involving laser or heat – Anytime a surgical procedure involves a laser or extreme heat, there is the potential for catastrophic injuries due to Oregon medical malpractice because they can easily cause damage to an unintended part of the body.  These tools can also burn through the target and damage other vital structures on the other side if the surgeon is not careful.  Tools can also cause surgical fires, particularly in abdominal surgeries where the use of towels and pads are most common.  These can lead to catastrophic and fatal internal injuries when a burning accident occurs.
