Organ Failure Due to Medical Malpractice in Bend, Oregon

Organ Failure Caused by Oregon Medical Malpractice: Bend Medical Malpractice Attorney Explains

We expect healthcare professionals to care and treat us properly.  While that usually happens, the times that it does not could be due to medical malpractice.  There are many difference reckless, careless, negligent, or even grossly negligence causes of medical malpractice.  But when a healthcare provider’s medical malpractice results in organ failure, particularly widespread organ failure, it can cause serious personal injuries and likely wrongful death.

Victims and their families who have suffered when a healthcare provider caused organ failure can be faced with excessive medical bills, lost wages, and significant pain and suffering.  These debilitating effects of a healthcare provider’s mistake(s) could last for years.  Unfortunately, many times healthcare providers will try to convince you that the mistake was inevitable, part of the accepted risks, or due to your own mistakes or body’s unpredictable reaction.  Below are some examples of how organ failure can be caused by medical malpractice and why you should never just accept what a healthcare provider, even a very trusted healthcare provider, tells you without having a medical malpractice attorney review your case for free.

What Causes Organ Failure?

Organ failure is exactly what it sounds like, when an organ stops functioning in the manner it is supposed to.  There are many causes of organ failure, some being unrelated to medical malpractice.  Commonly conditions like sepsis or cancer can cause organ failure.  But created conditions like infections, lack of oxygen during a surgery, or medication overdoses can also cause organ failure.  Additionally, trauma caused to an organ during a surgical procedure can also cause an organ to fail.

Oregon Medical Malpractice Causing Organ Failure

When a healthcare provider fails to exercise reasonable care in performing the care or treatment of a patient, it can be due to medical malpractice which can cause organ failure.  Some common medical malpractice mistakes or surgical errors which result in organ failure include the following:

  • Medication or drug overdoses – improper dosage of a drug can result in a caustic injury to an organ, particularly the kidneys, liver, or even the stomach.  These medications can damage vital restructures beyond repair.
  • Surgical errors – surgery is always dangerous because part of the body is being manipulated or operated on, usually with a sharp instrument.  This means that the slip of a knife can cause an irreparable injury to an organ.  But also improperly clamping or exerting pressure on an organ or its vessels could cause damage (i.e., during a hysterectomy accidentally clamping a ureter from the kidney along the pelvic brim to the bladder can cause organ failure of the kidney due to hyperhydrosis).
  • Anesthesia errors – not just due to an overdose and anesthesia, but also failing to ensure that the patient has the proper oxygen and perfusion during a surgery.  Lack of oxygen can cause organ to shut down and begin to die, particularly the brain.
  • Dropping a patient – during the care of a patient, the patient may be completely dependent on the healthcare provider to help transfer him or her.  This could be due to a serious leg or hip injury, or can be after a surgery when the patient is completely anesthetized.  If a patient is dropped on his or her head, it can result in a severe and traumatic brain injury which could cause the brain to stop functioning properly.
