Wrongful Death from Post Surgical Colonoscopy Injuries: Oregon Medical Malpractice Lawyers

Post Surgical Colonoscopy Injuries Causing Wrongful Death: Oregon Medical Malpractice Attorney Explains

Colonoscopies are considered to be generally safe procedures.  Studies have found that post surgical injuries from colonoscopies occur in only approximately 2% of all colonoscopies.  This is an incredibly low percentage of incidents.  But when actually looking at the numbers, with other statistics noting that there are 14.2 million colonoscopies performed each year in the United States, that means there are almost 300,000 victims of botched colonoscopies.  This number is an incredibly high figure of victims.  Unfortunately, some of these victims will be injured due to Oregon medical malpractice.

Even worse is that some of these victims may be wrongfully killed due to the medical malpractice of the healthcare providers during this “generally safe” procedure.  This means that healthcare providers will have needlessly, recklessly, carelessly, and otherwise negligently caused a victim’s wrongful death during a procedure which is not supposed to be dangerous or deadly.  This can be very serious Oregon medical malpractice that can affect an entire family.

How Can Post Surgical Colonoscopy Injuries Cause a Wrongful Death in Oregon?

The main risk from a colonoscopy is a bowel perforation.  When a bowel perforation occurs, the tools used by the surgeon may cut, tear, or rip through the colon, rectum, or intestines.  This can cause a leak of waste product and fluid into the abdominal cavity.  This can bring bacteria into the abdomen.  The abdomen is a perfect environment for bacteria to grow and multiply.  When this happens it can result in a massive infection.  This infection can grow so quickly that the first symptoms a patient has will come on fast and hard, and lead to sepsis.

Sepsis is a blood infection which is widespread throughout the body.  This means that the entire body is getting pumped with the bacteria in the blood.  This can result in horrific injuries, including amputations and organ injuries.  When the organ injuries become so damaging, you may hear about “multiple organ failure.”  This is a very serious condition which occurs when one organ stops functioning or when one organ system stops working, and the other organs also fail.

This can all be caused by a very small perforation during a colonoscopy.  This means that the injury from something so small can completely kill a patient.

Other ways that a colonoscopy can result in a wrongful death includes anesthesia use.  The anesthesia that is used is usually a sedative.  But in some instances, particularly for a large biopsy or polyp removal, a surgeon may decide to put the patient out under general anesthesia instead.  This anesthesia could result in very serious and catastrophic injuries to a patient, including brain damage or organ damage.  An overdose can easily cause the wrongful death of a patient.
